Pharmacy Questions
Q: What is generic drug?
A: Generic drugs are drugs produced and distributed without patent protection. The generic medicine may still have a patent on the formulation but not on the active ingredient. A generic drug contains the same active ingredient as the original formulation. Generic drugs are identical to the brand name drugs in respect to pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. They are also identical in intended use, efficacy, safety, dose, route of administration. Generic drugs can only differ from brand-name drugs in color, shape, and sometimes in amount of excipients.
Q:What is brand-name drug?
A: A brand-name drug is a drug that has a trade name and is protected by a patent. It means that this drug can be produced and sold only by the company that holds this patent.
Q:Why generic drugs are much cheaper than brand name drugs?
A: When a company launches a new brand-name product, it already spent substantial amount of money on laboratory and clinical research, development, marketing and promotion of this medicine. These costs are included in product price. When the patent expires, drug companies can begin manufacturing and sell generic versions of the brand drugs. And because they didn't have expenses on researching, developing and marketing a new drug, they can sell drugs for 50%-70% less than the cost of brand name drugs.
Q: What are the standards for manufacturing generic drugs?
A: There are no different standards for manufacturing generic or brand drugs. Both brand and generic drugs have to correspond to the strict rule of GMP and ISO standards.
